UNCLASSIFIED (U) indicates the absence of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and classified information. (U) as a portion marking indicates the absence of CUI and classified information. UNCLASSIFIED when not used in a marking, indicates that the information being referred to is not classified, but does not indicate whether or not the information is controlled (CUI) or not. (Definition from National Archives and Record Administration/NARA)
Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) is government created or owned information that requires safeguarding or dissemination controls consistent with applicable laws, regulations and government wide policies. CUI is not classified information. It is not corporate intellectual property unless created for or included in requirements related to a government contract.
